Candy Cane Nails

My friend Aleta over at For the Sake of Giveaways inspired me to try my own candy cane mani since Christmas is quickly approaching.

I wanted to practice and see what worked better...Red over white? White over red? Glitter? No glitter? So, pardon my lack of cleanup here, although it isn't as bad as I had imagined it would be.

For the index and ring finger, I did a base of three coats of OPI's Love Is A Racquet (honestly, this could have taken one coat, but I am OCD) and used my white LA Colors striper. For my middle and pinky finger, I used three coats of OPI's Alpine Snow and Sinful Colors 'Pretty Cool' striper.

As you can see, my first two fingers have kinda wonky spacing and angles as far as the stripes go, but I had it figured out by the last two fingers.

At this point, I liked the white stripes over red polish much better (index and ring). The red that I chose was a much more 'Christmas-y' red than my red striper. I did think that if I had used the same color to stripe with, that you wouldn't be able to tell the red over white as opposed to white over red, if that makes sense.

Then, of course, I had to try some glitter over top of it. I used Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure. My camera had a hard time picking up the beautiful, flaky, sparkly-ness that is this polish.

It made Love Is A Racquet smear pretty bad on my index finger. Seems like the best plan of action should have been as little strokes as possible. I did better on the ring finger, but it still smeared a little bit. The red stripes over white polish fingers didn't smear one bit.

Once I had the glitter on, I liked the deeper red better. The glitter stood out much more and brought out the red in the polish, so it didn't look so dark. Also, since it didn't smear, the lines still looked nice and crisp even with the glitter over top. Sometimes, lines don't need to be softened and this was one of those times.

This mani turned out really cute and I am sure I will be wearing this closer to the holidays.

Unfortunately, I can't decide which I like better! lol. What do you think?

  4. *jealous* I like this much better than mine!!!! You did great!!! I can't believe you kept your hands steady enough for lines that good. My ass would have had zig zags for sure!!! I really have no striping skills. AT ALL!!!!

  5. Thank you. Actually, I was rather impressed myself. I did it on the couch and didn't really have anywhere to set my hand, so I held it up and rested my painting wrist on my other one. And yes, it looks as awkward as it sounds, but it worked really well. lol.

I even did little candy cane nails on Mallory, but she ate the polish off in about a half an hour.

  7. I'm stopping by from the Lets Get Social Blog Hop! I'm following you on twitter & GFC. I love your nails. The lighter red looks like the traditional candy cane color, but I really like the deeper red. What a creative way to show your Christmas spirit. I love it thanks for sharing! I'd love for you to stop by if you have some spare time. Have a blessed day.
